I need some help with site statistics. Is it possible to track a user's
country and city from the IP address. I mean when users visit a web site I track
their IP and store in the database, I think it would be nice if somehow I could also
come to know about the user's country and city from the IP address or by using
any other method of tracking.

Any advice on how to go about this.

You will need some IP->country database and some server side scripting to help you translate the IP data in your database.

There are quite a few I think, but I know of only two that I have used myself:

1. from MaxMind.com.

2. from Directi.com.

Anyone know how big these databases are? I have used similar databases in the telecom sector and they are usually a pain to deal with.

I must admit, I have NEVER really looked at the size of these databases, since I do everything via SSH to get it on my webserver at vilitas.com. I use it with phpadsnew for GEO targeting ads. It isn't very big I think... but I can easily give you the details later when I am able to log into my account next.
