Tracking Googlebot

As most fellow webmasters know, Google is by far becoming the most important search engine to be in. This has given Googlebot a higher than earthly status amongst webmasters.

So, any of you guys seen the fabled bot go by your sites? I am pretty sure one of my sites got hit...I have a PR (had nothing over the weekend). I don't see Google "dancing hard" on my keyphrases just yet...

*bows* before the GREAT Googlebot

Yep, without google, I would die

Anyway, since last month I have stopped tracking Googlebot and what it does on my website.

Now I am only interested in MSN / Excite.

They are 2 'new' Search Engines who has been increasingly sending me hits directly to my articles - I know something has changed on Excite (cause their links-in are different from the usual ones I used to get).

MSN used to send the occasional traffic only to my main page but since 2 days ago, it's changed to individual web pages ...

BTW, what's a "I have a PR"?

I went from being 'unranked' in Google to getting a page rank.

The best way to get listed is to seach your key words in Google, email the webmasters of the top 10-20 sites that Google returns and setup reciprocal links with them. If they are competitors then you can skip them over, but anyone else related to your biz should be contacted.

Since Google already lists their sites, it will comeback at a later date to crawl them and will also crawl every outgoing link from these sites, eventually ending up on yours.

Google is big on back links so Divs idea is the way to go! Certainly seems more productive than simply submitting.

In an ideal world what Div said is what you should do - reality though, is something else...

In my experience no webmaster who has a top ranked page is going to entertain your request to exchange links (even if they are not running a similar site as you). If they do, it will be extremely rare and you can consider yourself lucky.

Another less stressful way is to really go through your 'targetted' top ranked site and insert your link wherever you can (i.e. guestbook, forum, news, comments, whatever that will allow you to paste your link on it basically). Don't forget to check out their robots.txt to save yourself some time (so you know what pages are going to be ignored by Google).

There are 2 places on this site for example where you can post your link and almost certainly get your site on Google, at least (i.e this forum or the guestbook). For the moment, google spiders this forum but how long it will last is anyone's guess...

yeah it does tend to work out that way
about 9 out of 10 sites that i ask for links on have rejected me (one reason being that i'm still working on getting a links page passed through what i call the website congress). But if i ask 1000 people ill get about 100 links which is not too bad!
so i'll keep working and doing what you guys suggested. I do realize that you are offering me a good opportunity here to give my url in my sig
It does help.

The main google site should be updated today (or tomorrow by the latest)with results from their latest crawl.
