SoundForge is probably one of the best audio editors out there....but unfortunately it isn't free. Not many choices here so you may have to dish out some money if you want to keep it on the up and up.

i didn't realise till a while after, that such a software came included with my soundcard CD, so go dig up the CDROM and look for it - it just might be there all along
