Reading data from a file into a multi-dimensional array

I hope I can count on your patience with a terribly simple question.

I know how to read data from a simple file such as
term1
term2
term3

into a PHP array, using the function file(). But I have been unable to determine how to read data of the form
term1 0
term2 7
tern3 3

into a 2-dimensional array.

I need to read the data from a file and at the end, write the updated data back to that file.

I would appreciate any tips!

Bruce
