I guess if you don't own a licence or haven't purchased the music or protect file in the first place, then yes it is illegal and breaking the copyright. If you do have a licence or have paid for the file then I guess it will depend on the file/music/etc. that you are removing the DRM for - some may not allow it.

In the U.S. it is illegal to attempt to alter or circumvent DRM properties or even to tell someone how to do such a thing, regardless of whether you paid for a license. Furthermore, Big Brother is watching.

However, U.S. readers might be interested in current events like this: News about an Anti-DRM Campaign

Im not quite sure though, what is the big issue with protected music/videos/etc. with DRM. There is so much piracy and theft of music/films/ etc..

The Original Poster asked for opinions. I gave a fact, and a link to something that might help people form their own opinions.

Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. (That includes you. That includes me.)

Sometimes basing one's actions on other peoples' opinions can lead to philosophical, emotional and/or legal conflicts.

Regards,

Dave

In the US, it's copyright infringement unless you have permission to do it. It doesn't matter if you bought the CD, digital download, or whatever. In other countries, the law varies.

Stripping the DRM to make a "clean" copy is a violation of the DCMA, so even if you had the right to copy a song, if you have to circumvent the DRM to do it, you end up breaking the law.

Yes, the information still shows up on the Internet, but it's still illegal, regardless of your personal views on it.

For the past one year, "Shakti" has registered multiple accounts on this forum; always pushing the same web site. I thought I had censored the domain name once before, but I guess not...

They even do the "talk-to-yourself" thingy: http://www.gidforums.com/t-10008.html.

Let's ignore this thread and others like it.
