Re: certification courses on javaThere appears to be differing opinions about these. Most people appear to think that it doesn't add anything to a programmer's abilities since it's really more about how many "coding hours" one has that shows experience; kinda like how a pilot with more flight hours is considered a "better" pilot.
However, managers and HR departments like to see certifications because it's another checkbox they can mark off. Java certs are held higher than MSCE et al. because people are less likely to go to a brain dump site to pass the test, thereby earning a "paper certification" rather than actually knowing anything. Since you have to know something about the Java language and programming in general, people who hire feel confident that having a Java cert means the applicant has a certain base level of knowledge. I'm trying to get approval from my boss to attend a Sun training course so I can get certified. If it happens, I'll let you know what it's like and whether it seems like a worthwhile effort. __________________
