I just wanted to announce that I was promoted to the green sash level yesterday in my kung fu class, which is the senior student/assistant instructor level. All I have to do to become a full instructor is write an essay about five concepts of kung fu (determined by my instructor) and create a new kata based on what I've learned.

The signifigance of this event is that I only started the class in April and that yesterday was the last class I'll be attending for a while so I can concentrate on my Master's degree (10 classes in 15 months, before I get out of the Navy).

I'm happy that I was able to attain the level by my personal deadline. I even got a couple of cool wooden swords to practice with (a chinese broadsword and a tai chi straight sword).

Wooden swords? Pfft... I used to play with them when I was a kid. Now if you have to handle ninchakus, then that's something. As I recall, you can seriously hurt yourself trying to use them.

I still practice w/ the foam nunchucks because I simply don't use them enough to be proficient. I can use the wooden ones but I have to go slow.

My personal weapon of choice right now is the bo staff. I'm not yet up to looking like Darth Maul, but I'm working on it. The cool thing about it is that you can carry one with you just about anywhere if you make it look like a walking staff.
