If the assignment is to open the document in Microsoft Word, then copy the document to a system where Microsoft Word is installed, and launch Microsoft Word and open the document. If the system with Microsoft Word is on a network and there is a file-sharing Samba server on the Linux system that has the document, and that system is network-accessible from the Microsoft Windows system, you can navigate with Windows Explorer through "My Network Places" to get to the document. You might have to search for the other computer first in order to get it to show up in "My Network Places". For Windows XP, click Start->Search->For Files or Folders->Computers or People->A computer on the network. If the two computers are not on the same network then get a physical copy (floppy disk, USB "thumb" drive, whatever...) On the other hand, if you are working on a Linux computer that has OpenOffice.org (or maybe certain other office suites), then you might be able to open the "Microsoft Word format" document on your Linux computer. If your Linux computer has Wine, and you have an authorized (licensed) copy if Microsoft Word, you can (probably) install Microsoft Word on your Linux computer. Note that I haven't tried this, but it may be possible. If so, then you can get a copy of the document and you can open it with Wine and Microsoft Word. Now in all cases, depending on the version of Microsoft Word that created the document, and depending on the nature of the image and depending on whether the image is embedded or linked within the Microsoft Word document, the image might or not be viewable and/or usable on another system. If the "Microsoft Word format" document was not actually created by Microsoft Word, but was created by some Linux office suite word processor (like the one in OpenOffice.org) you might or might not be able to view the image if you open it with Microsoft Word. You might or might not be able to view the image even on another Linux computer with the same office application, depending on the types of libraries, fonts, etc that are installed on the other machine. I'm not trying to make your assignment seem complicated just because I like to do such things, but a point here is that word processor documents that use proprietary file formats are not the best choice for document exchange. Even documents created by Microsoft Word may not be usable with other versions of Microsoft Word. If you have problems opening the document or viewing the image, then I respectfully suggest that you get advice from whoever it was at wherever it was that gave you the assignment. Regards, Dave |
