CD/DVD burner problem

I have a DVD/CD device (manufacturer Sony, but it is an OEM device and so Sony won't give me tech support). It reads DVDs fine, but it has suddenly stopped being able to read CD's...in fact, it does not even see them in there.
I've been able to play DVD movies on my computer, but can no longer play music CD's, run CD programs, or even put in a blank CD to burn it, because it does not recognize that there is a CD on the tray.

It worked fine the last time I used it for a CD, which was a few weeks ago.

I ran device manager, which says the device is working properly.

I can't figure out how to troubleshoot this issue.

Re: CD/DVD burner problem

See if there are updated drivers for it and maybe firmware. You might also try uninstalling it from Device Manager then letting the computer redetect it and reinstall the software.

Re: CD/DVD burner problem

I uninstalled and reinstalled the device, and it is still not seeing CD's.

I tried using Windows to update the drivers, but Windows said it could not find any drivers that were better than the ones that were on the computer.

I tried going to the Sony site, but they don't have drivers for it on their site.

Re: CD/DVD burner problem

It could be a known issue. Does the Sony site mention anything about your model? How about Sony forums?

Personally I stay away from Sony products nowadays. Their quality has steadily decreased in the last decade or so. It's entirely possible that the drive itself is FUBAR and you may need a new one. Is it still under warranty? Does your OEM you bought it from support it?

I talked to their live tech support on the Sony site. They said that they do not support this unit....that they manufacture it for another company.

I don't know, I haven't looked for any yet. I'll search for them.

No, it is not under warranty, and unfortunately, the OEM I bought it from seems to be no longer in existance.

If I can't find a solution, I'll look for a new one.
