Question

newbie with stupid questions

Hi all

I am new to PHP and I would like some advice on getting started.

I have some web space on Discount-hosting.com.

they have php,mysql,apache on UNIX.

My first quetion concerns configuring my own setup.

I have EASYphp package. Apache, php, msql, on windows XP.
I want to configure my set up the(approximately) same as my host company.

Is it worth the trouble?
if so how do I do it?

second question
For my first project I want to make a simple file editor using a form. I want to know how I set up
A test space that only I can enter on host site.
with permission to create read and delete files.
I am not yet farmiliar with file permisions.

If you know of a good tutorial on www. please let me know or
if someone else has already done this topic before let me knowthe thread name.

Thanx for any help

Yes, it's definitely worth it and even recommended. This is what I did previously... Just save a copy of your phpinfo page (off your webserver) and set up the local version (PHP+MySQL+Apache) on your PC to match it as close as possible. Of course, since your live server is Unix, some things would be different (like paths and such)...

It will be difficult for me to answer all your little questions in the 2nd part of your question in one little post.

I will however point you to some information to one: restricting access to a certain part of your website is possible with either a .htaccess file and Apache (an example here) or writing a simple PHP script (an example here). If you want to discuss this further, feel free to start a new thread with your choice and your specific questions to just this one topic.
