Linux Hosts Produce Better Uptime?

Do you think that linux based web hosts produce better uptime? According to the lates Netcraft ranking list 8 of top 10 ranked companies are Linux.

Re: Linux Hosts Produce Better Uptime?

Depends on how well your sysadmins can manage the system. An "adminkiddie" (think scriptkiddie only for sysadmin functions) on a Linux box probably won't be as good as a veteran Windows admin, even though Linux is considered better than Windows. And vice versa; the system is only as good as the skills of the person monitoring it.

However, one big benefit to *nix over Windows is that patches and updates don't require a reboot every time. Granted, not everything for Windows does, but enough do that it becomes a PITA. That can fudge the uptime results.

I agree. Besides Windows GUI has take up some resources which mean you might experience spikes more than *nix with the same account hosting numbers.

Re: Linux Hosts Produce Better Uptime?

This web server, the one this site is being served from, is up for quite a while now (nearly half a year).

Here's the top results:

Code:
top - 08:27:21 up 180 days, 23:22, 1 user, load average: 0.01, 0.02, 0.00 Tasks: 116 total, 2 running, 114 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 0.0% us, 0.0% sy, 0.0% ni, 100.0% id, 0.0% wa, 0.0% hi, 0.0% si Mem: 1035036k total, 881056k used, 153980k free, 46112k buffers Swap: 2031608k total, 128k used, 2031480k free, 454252k cached

I am amazed that the server loads are SO low. It has been like that for quite a while now.

Some of the things that helped, include:
  1. APC, see Alternative PHP Cache (APC)
  2. Updating the kernel
  3. Optimising the MySQL server
  4. Monitoring the system log files for abuse and blocking them (IPs). This, unfortunately, is a daily affair.
  5. Monitoring web server log files and blocking the many (MANY) rogue bots that a web site can attract.
  6. Always think of 'memory use factor' when writing scripts and optimise (EXPLAIN) all your SQL queries...

Last July (2006), we had about 1,838 users online at www.gidforums.com (most of them bots of course), but still the server held it's own. If I am not mistaken, the server load was hovering between 0.20 - 0.30 at the time of the 'attack'.
