W2K slow on first access to "My Computer"I had my workstation at work upgraded from NT4 to W2K a few months ago. Ever since the upgrade I've noticed that the first time an application accesses "My Computer" (typically via a browse function), it takes about 30 seconds to come back with the list of local and network drives. It happens once for each application. By that I mean that it's slow on the first Word browse and then slow on the first Excel browse, etc. Subsequent browses of "My Computer" in Word or Excel are fast. I didn't see this behaviour in NT4 or in the XP I have at home. I have roughly the same number of local/network drives on the W2K system as I did on the NT4 system. Others at work have noticed the same behaviour.
Any ideas? Thx |

There's usually a delay when accessing optical drives and network disks. Try removing one or all of your network drives and see if it speeds things up. Also when you mount the network drives, select authenticate on logon. See if that works.

Re: W2K slow on first access to "My Computer"Hello Bone Scavenger
Oddly enough it is a path problem, in an install of a device it goes through the device index first, a simple fix until you find the device, is to create a shortcut of “My Computer” to the desktop or in your folder. You have put the short cut on the first part of the index searches. Spiker |
