Can't install Linux on SATA HDD ?

Hi folks,

I have just bought a new PC whose configuration is given below:
RAM : 512mb (Simmtronics)
HDD : 160GB (SEAGATE) SATA
Processer : Pentium Dual Core 2.66GHz
Motherboard : Intel D101 GGC

The problem is that if Install Any version of LINUX it says NO HARDDISK DEVICE FOUND. What is the problem here ? I have installed linux many a times on NON-SATA HDD. Is there any different kind of procedure for it? Kindly Help asap..................

With regards
NAPSTER

Re: Can't install Linux on SATA HDD ?

Your kernel may not be set up for SATA drives; if you know how to compile a kernel then take a look at the kernel configuration. You can either set up the kernel packages as plugin modules or compiled directly into the kernel.

You may also need to make sure you have the correct device drivers installed. They're normally included by default since many distros consider SATA drives to be SCSI, but there may be a config file somewhere that needs to be modified to indicated SATA rather than normal IDE.

I don't have any direct experience, but colleague of mine found that he could install Fedora Core 5 on his new system with SATA, but not Fedora Core 4 or several other distributions that he had tried (regardless of motherboard BIOS settings).

Since SATA is the coming thing, I assume as new distributions are released, more will support easy installation.

Good Luck!

Regards,

Dave

Re: Can't install Linux on SATA HDD ?

Hi members,

I don't have that much experience with linux. Just studied this as a subject in COURSE. Doesn't have any idea regarding compiling the KERNEL. Now i have decided to call some HARDWARE SUPPORT for this problem. Thanks a lot for replying so early to the post.

With regards

So Parth, you just copied and pasted realnapster's posting? Is this really the same problem?

Re: Can't install Linux on SATA HDD ?

Hi @ member,

I tried many versions regarding my problem but finally i came up with two solutions:

1. I used a live CD, the best option available for a student.
2. Installed Suse Linux , i don't remember the version most probably it was 11th version.

I tried these two options and now working fine. Dave has made it clear in the very beginning that SATA support is not available with old versions. The same has happened here.

regards
