It's a driver thing. Your CD-RW is currently using a generic driver from the /system32 folder. You've gotta find the correct driver. But to do that, the drive better be recognised correctly.

I've seen that your error comes up if your ASPI installation isn't tip-top. The Adaptec website has a newer version of the ASPI layer you can try, 4.6 seems to be the most stable.

XP has CD burning capabilities built in, courtesy of Roxio/Adaptec, better known as the group who gave us Easy CD creator. But this may not work with all drives or software, so look up the manufacturers website & see if the support page mentions any XP problems. You may need to flash the drives firmware.

First of all I want to thank you for the help you are providing.

There are two important points that I feel I should point out at this time.

1- I am completely computer illiterate, so you will have to bear with me. I grasp things pretty readily, so I think I can still work with u in spite of my obvious short comings.

2- Recently purchased laptop from the same manufacturer as my desktop . There was a Windows XP install CD included. Since it wasn't being used, I decided to use it on the desktop computer.

I am not familliar with the terms you used in your response to my query.

Again, thanks for any help. It is really needed. I can't even get rid of XP if I had to because I can't run a CD. (don't want to uninstall if I don't have to

No worries at all, I'll turn down the fog factor

OK, the problem is with the hardware drivers. XP has drivers built in for most hardware, but they're not always the best.

One thing you need a driver for is called ASPI, standing for Advanced SCSI Programming Interface. SCSI was a super fast way of connecting hard drives and CD drives to your computer. Nowadays things have caught up so it's not so funky now.

When CD-RW drives came out first, they were connected using the SCSI interface. So Windows built in it's own support for CD-RW drives & called it ASPI. Today, CD-RW drives connect using the "normal" interfaces your CD-ROM & hard disks use (EIDE), but the SCSI name is something that Windows held onto.

Windows 98 had no such thing, so the manufacturer of your CD-RW had to do all the work installing a working versior for you. But XP has it's own version built in.

The version of ASPI you've installed may not work with your drive, which will cause these problems. So you should try to get a better version, and as I said, the Adaptec website has a newer version of the ASPI layer you can try, 4.6 seems to be the most stable.

If you install that, and download the latest driver for your CD-RW drive, maybe you'll have more luck.

Try it out & see

Again, please bear with me. I found the product you alluded to but the directions it gave me to install it left me somewhat in the dark.
1- Run
2- browse
3-locate INSTALLBAT file in the directory files extracted to.

I did not see the file nor do I know how to locate it. Can u help once more? Am eternally grateful, and will try not to take up much more of your time.

Thanks,
jman

Hey

it's hard to tell exactly where install.bat file has gone to, especially when I'm not in front of your computer! The instructions don't strike me as being any good, must be a dodgy translation.

I found better instrunctions on the Adaptec website www.adaptec.com

It says (for XP only) to go to Start > Run, and type "C:\adaptec\aspi\install.bat XP32" without the quotes.

Hope this helps.

GF, first of all let me thank you for all the helpful info. it was truly appreciated. I think the best thing for me to do is to try and find a way to remove XP from my computer and attempt a clean install.

Is there a way to uninstall XP so that I can restore 98 without the CD, since I can't get the Rom to work?
