Take a look at www.gamasutra.com. It's geared towards the game industry and has a lot of info.

Re: Jobs in the Video Game World

The video game industry is actually expanding by leaps and bounds.

There are quite a few jobs available for the taking if you know how to approach them.

As far as programming goes, to get anywhere in the industry you have to keep ahead of the game (no pun intended). It's real easy to get behind, and plenty of people are tumbling over each other to get through technical school as it is.

Music is one of the areas that the industry is getting ready to slingshot outward. A lot of BGM bands are starting to crawl out of the woodwork, and developers are going to be looking for ways to offer customization to their customers in the area of music, especially with the classics.

Beyond that, music itself is a very important part of a video game as a meta art, and even traditional video game soundtrack work can get fairly lucrative.

Some nice programs to toy around with if you are interested are FruityLoops, AcidPro, and even Reason (though beware with the latter, I've known some who've had to take several college courses just to navigate through a mere 10 percent of its' full capabilities).

Overall, especially with a creative edge on your competition (i.e., your peers), you can make your own place in the industry with enough hard work and time.

But remember, many others are thinking the same exact thing.

Don't forget GarageBand, if you own or are considering buying a Mac.
