Verisign pull a fast one with dot com and dot net

Read the news here: http://www.wired.com/news/technology...,60473,00.html

Many backbone's are going to patch their servers so that Verisign sites don't appear when you mistype a .net or a .com site, which provide you with a list of likely candidates most of them sponsored. I think the one's I resolve to have already done it as I couldn't get anything to appear, but maybe others aren't so lucky.

Here's the most interesting bit though:

Quote:
Vixie said that ISC's customers -- typically ISPs and large enterprises -- needed a fix because VeriSign's Site Finder broke their spam filters.

Vixie said a lot of spam spoofs the "from" domain, and that many ISP-level spam filters check whether incoming e-mail is from a valid domain or not. Instead of generating errors, the spam filter checks are instead being rerouted to the Site Finder service, and therefore appear to originate from a legitimate domain.

Vixie said the ISC's customers aren't too concerned with advertising. "They don't want to help spammers. It's the lack of a viable spam-detection mechanism they're worried about. They are concerned about spam, not advertising," Vixie said.

I was reading about this yesterday and yes, I got to http://sitefinder.verisign.com/lpc?u...desilvabiz.com when i typed in www.desilvabiz.com in the address bar.

Strange indeed... but I rarely ever mistype urls; so I don't expect to see this much.
