Doctype Declaration and Google rankings

I suspected it and purposely upgraded half the site (with the proper Doctype Declaration) and left the other half untouched...

and guess what, all those updated pages got a trememdous boost on Google rankings - is it just coincidence or something that's relevant??

Any similar experiences or thoughts welcomed.

How would I find out waht the proper doctype is for my pages? BTW I am not in the Google index at all :-?
