Cool

Could someone please help me with a cd burning problem?

Alright, first off I have to say that I joined this site just to get help with burning cds because I don't know who else to ask and my parents don't know what's wrong. I think it's a small problem, really. Ok, so we recently (when I say recently I mean this past January) got a Dell Dimension 5150. I was excited (it has such a lovely flat screen!) and quickly uploaded my itunes to it. It worked fine burning cds for a long time but the past three months it's been crazy. It will burn songs onto a CD-RW just fine but that doesn't really help me because those won't play in my car or really in any other convenient place. When it comes to CD-Rs' itunes will start to burn the songs and when it's done with about 5 songs it will automatically cancel the burn (it's soo annoying!) and the CD is then wasted. I've tried to burn them in other things such as real player and even in windows but it does the same thing so I'm guessing it's a computer problem and not an itunes problem. So, I would be so very grateful if anyone out there could give me a bit of help with this. I've done my best to try and figure it out on my own but I really don't know. Thanks for taking time to read my little story here and thanks for the help!

Have you ever been able to burn usable discs? Does it only happen when burning music? Regarding iTunes, what are your disc burning settings?

Yes I've been able to burn useable discs but it's just starting to act up over the past couple of months. As far as I know it happens only with music. Last week I puts some pictures onto a CD-R to transfer to another computer and it worked just fine. I'm really not sure what my settings on itunes are.

Re: Could someone please help me with a cd burning problem?

My mom upgraded itunes today to like..6.0 or something ( I think it's the newest one) so I'd figure I'd try it again. It didn't work and this time it stopped during the first song. A box came up and said "disk burn failed. an unknown error occured (4261)"

so don't know if that helps but I'm stumped.

I'm not sure how Windows configures iTunes (I have a Mac), but you should be able to find your burning settings under a menu titled "Preferences->Advanced->Burning" or similar. You should have several options for making CDs, like MP3 or audio. You might try changing the settings; I made many coasters until I changed it to make MP3 discs. Be aware that it won't auto-convert songs to MP3; they have to already be in MP3 format but it's easy to make iTunes do that. Let me know if you need help w/ that.

If you have any MP3 files already in iTunes, like from a previous collection, then you should try burning an MP3 disc and see if that works. For any burning s/w you use, you need to make sure you're burning the correct type of disc. An audio CD requires the tracks to be in .wav format (I don't know if they will auto-convert them while burning); iTunes will also make these types of files. If you're trying to make MP3 discs, then you want to use the "create data CD" or "create MP3 CD", depending on the software you're using.
