Re: learning terminal commands in linuxQuote:
Open a terminal and enter "help" and you get a hint about the commands built into the bash shell (At least that's what I get on my Fedora installation; I assume that ubuntu also uses the bash shell.) You can read details in the Bash reference manual. If it isn't on your machine (or if you can't find it), then you can get it from here: GNU Bash Reference Manual Now, in addition to the built-in commands of Bash, there are many, many (many) other applications in a typical Linux installation. How many? Well if you hit the "tab" key twice, it will ask you if you want to see all of the possible commands. For example, it prompts me with "Display all 4380 possibilities? (y or n)". By the way, there are others installed that are more likely to be used by (or even restricted to) the root user, so they will not be on the user $PATH. There may be others installed also not on the user $PATH but accessed either by clicking on some GUI icon or by some other indirect means. So, rather than trying to figure out which of the commands to try to understand, I'm guessing that you want to get a book or search the web for introductory tutorials on using Linux command line applications. I hesitate to recommend any particular book, since my tastes and appreciation (and my feeling for what is appropriate for beginners) may not be very helpful. First of all, let me say that I have no connection with any print publisher or online provider. Having said that, I will mention that I can't remember a single time that I bought an book from O'Reilly publishers that turned out to be less useful than my first impression led me to believe. (And I have to tell you that I am a book junkie. I buy lots of books --- or at least I used to.) I would recommend that you look at "Linux in a Nutshell", published by O'Reilly. But, and this is important, don't take my word for this or anything else; don't trust on-line reviews; don't spend your money because of any individual's opinion. Go to a bookstore and look through the book. (Or go to O'Reilly's home page or amazon or somewhere that you can browse through some parts of it.) On the web, there is a lot of free material, and you can poke around a little to see if any particular site presents tutorial information in a way that you can appreciate. Here are a couple that you might start with: LinuxCommand Tutorial tuxfiles Tutorial Enjoy! Regards, Dave |

My dear boy, please don't; you will never be the same again. Look at me, I was quite sane before I encountered Linux, but now I'm a gibbering wreck, and my shrink holds out little hope for me. I am only thinking of your future health. (I don't like Linux by the way.) |

Re: learning terminal commands in linuxYou can also just do a search for bash commands. That should give you cheatsheets that show the most common/useful commands to know.
