AMD or Intel

hi guys i need to buy a new motherboard and i am confused between making an AMD or INTEL system.
so here are few choices i hope u guys could give me some help

for AMD processor

1.MSI K8NGM2-IL with geforce6100 + nforce 410

2.MSI K8N Neo4-F with nforce 4 chipset

3.ASUS A8N-VM

i will be getting a athlon 64 3000+ 1.8ghz 800FSB with them which i would upgrade later i can't afford an expensive one right now.

& for intel

1.asus P5LD2-VM with intel 945G chipset

2.intel 945GNTL

3.intel D102 GGC2 with ati xpress200 chip

i will be getting a 3.0 ghz with 800FSB to go with it

i must mention that i am not going to overclock

and i have heard that asus P5LD2-VM supports intel core 2 Duo? i am not sure about it but anyways it has not yet arrived in PAKISTAN. just curious u know if i would upgrade later

these are the latest boards avaailable in PAKISTAN i cannot get anything else like Gigabyte or DFI etc.

a.please suggest a descent future proof mobo and tell me which onboard chip is better & why?

b. please suggest a graphic card

and last but not least i can only get kingston RAM what do u guys think of KINGSTON RAMS have u encountered any problems with them?

In this age nothing is future proof, how long do you expect for today's latest to remain so?

But, as regards your question, I don't know why, I'd always go in for an intel... really wonder why. Can't justify my choice... but it would be an intel for me.

Best regards,
netnut.

Re: AMD or Intel

My preference is AMD for the price/performance ratio, although Intel is catching up. Nowadays the performance for either one is nearly the same so I'd recommend shopping by price. Also, buy one or two generations below what the most current model is. The price is way better and you only lose 10-15% performance normally.

Correct me if I'm wrong crystal, but aren't there compatibility problems with AMD? I don't know where I got that piece of (wrong?) notion... but is it true?

If all the software available run on AMD without any gliches then the price to performance ratio is a good criteria to take a decision... (and how come Intel has to play catch-up? I didn't know that market leaders needed to play catch up!)

No. AMD hasn't had compatibility problems since the 386. If it does, I haven't heard of them.

When they originally started making x86 chips, AMD didn't have a license for the "real" x86 code from Intel, IIRC. Hence they essentially reverse-engineered their chips which cause compatablity problems. AMD has licensed the x86 code from Intel for at least 10 years so there hasn't been any problems that I'm aware of.

And yes, both AMD and Intel play catch up to each other. Intel may be the market leader, but it's getting close to the 50/50 mark between them. AMD's Opterons are still beating Intel's chips on servers (or at least they were at the beginning of the year). Intel's HT technology was basically a stop-gap to compete w/ AMD when AMD came out w/ Hypertransport; the technology is different but the performance was similar.

AMD is still beating Intel in the memory management area. AMD has the memory controller as part of the CPU die whereas Intel is still relying on the Northbridge to do this. This means the integrated memory controller can perform better since it's not running at bus speeds.

As a final thought, you still pay the "Intel tax" that's a holdover from the 80's and 90's. To paraphrase the quote, "No one ever got fired for buying Intel." Intel can charge a little bit more because they were the big boys on the block, just like IBM, and people still seem to think that matters nowadays. Plus there's still the "AMD incompatibility" myth that people are continually dragging out, so some people are afraid of change.
