Where do I go now? - Questions about PHP, and etc.

I'm sure there is a thread on here for ever step I need to take. However, I don't know the first thing about PHP, MySQL, etc.

I want to add login access to certain pages on my website to offer visitors a members page.

Where do I start and what do I do?

My host says that the version of MySQL is 4.0.14

PHP version 4.3.1

I don't even know what other info you might need about my server.

Point me in the right direction. What posts should I read and in what order should they be done?

Thank you for your time,
Justin

JdS is still working with me on it. We will soon configure it to work properly. There must be some problem with the code cuz I am having trouble too.

He said hes pretty busy this week, hopefully he will post here when he gets a chance.

still confused

I'll probably need to be baby-stepped through this. All this terminology is whizzing over my head. lol

What exactly has to be set up and configured and how?

My host has a FAQ that says I have to host MySQL on my site.

I really don't know what I have to load onto my FTP and into what folders, etc.

Start me from the very beginning. What am I looking at setting up?

Thanks for your patience.

Learning PHP: Nothing beats a good book!

Hello Justin,

PHP is already getting to be such a comprehensive scripting language. Like all other 'programming' languages, you will need to figure out some basic things to do with it before attempting to write or use web applications written in PHP (and MySQL).

The only way you can start to figure out PHP is to get it set up on your own PC at home (so you can experiment freely). Have you done that already?

If you have, tell us about the set up... Is it on Windows XP? Do you have web server like 'Apache' set up? Do you know how to get Apache started on your PC? What happens when you go to http://localhost with a browser? Stuff like that...

Nearly everyone here can post many links to popular PHP websites but I will instead suggest you buy at least one good book on the subject. The only book I have on PHP (the one I started with and still refer on occasion) is PHP and MySQL Web Development by Welling and Thomson. I think they've just released a 2nd edition so grab that if you're interested.

If you're not certain about a book, visit your local library and borrow a few to get that head-start with the basics... usually, any good book on the subject will also cover how you can get PHP / MySQL set up and working on your Windows PC.

Thank you

Thank you. I appreciate your input.

I'm running Win98. I don't have Apache on my PC, my website host uses Apache.

The more I try to tinker with PHP and MySQL, the more I realize that I may just need to pay someone to help me add this feature to my website.

I do like to do hands-on and I've self-taught myself HTML and a little Javascript and Flash. So, I'm a novice. I am determined to learn more about PHP & MySQL, but for now is there anyone that would be willing to help me add this to my site?

Thanks,
Justin Parker

Download and Install the Apache Web Server

Well, there you go... your first order of the day should be to download the Apache Web Server and install it to your Windows 98 machine.

There are currently 2 flavours of the software; v.2 and v.1.3.28.

I would suggest you get the version 1.3.28 for now: To download, go to http://httpd.apache.org/ and look for the download link to the correct version for win32. (i.e. 1.3.28)

More details here: http://httpd.apache.org/docs/windows.html#down

Post again if you have ANY questions...
