Grub

I wanted to know what goes wrong when you restart the computer in the middle of installing Linux, because the system doesn't boot any more, I get a grub> prompt. I can't reinstall again.

What's the solution? I've found a grub manual but I'd rather know what the problem is before I read that.

Thanks in advance

Re: grub

IIRC, it's equivalent to rebooting Windows in the middle of an install; grub doesn't have enough information to establish a boot menu because the file system is corrupted.

I've had this happen before when my laptop's CD drive acted up. I believe I just had to boot to the CD and wipe the drive to install the OS; you should be able to use the install process to wipe the drive. If not, then use fdisk from an emergency prompt, if available. If you have a LiveCD it may let you correct the problem somewhat easily.

Freeze in the middle of an install???
Dump it...

Windows or Linux you can usually locate format somewhere on an install set:
format hda(x)
...and start again.

You don't want the install program to continue to install around a screw up...
It will still be there waiting to pounce when you least expect.

Re: Grub

These things happen a lot, the solution is to go for linux installation again, Windows partition is not affected anyway.
