Re: More OOP in Python

I just posted a GID Community blog entitled: More OOP in Python.

Quote:
Here is another Python module I just finished. I'm learning how to use classes and other Object Oriented Programming (OOP) ideas vs. my old way of thinking using functions. At first it was extremely difficult to think in OO ways; the first time I tried to create a character-creator program I got about halfway before I got confused.

This time it went easier, most likely because I revised what was needed for a basic character and designed for that. Plus, I didn't just try to pull over my procedural-based modules and make it work; I rewrote the code in a more OO way and had many fewer errors this time. read more...

Please let me know what you think.

Re: More OOP in Python

[a.] I think I know the address of just about every python cgi tutorial that Google can find.

[b.] My laptop and internet connection are temporarily not available in operational mode and I won't be able to get past the NYState library's firewalls to avail my ssh. So I'm stuck with browser and /cgi-bin/ it would seem to me.

Question: Where can I go to have some secret tutorial show me step by step (with hand-holding) telling me where to put what file for a few simple arrangements in python where there are like three files sample1.py, form.html, template.html =+= I'll buy a book if someone knows of one that gets me what I need for fast relief inside my fast-enabled but super-noob Martian head.

I don't know which of these files go into the cgi-bin. I do understand that python does not like binary mode ftp -- so, if I just use the cpanel text editor am I using text mode, which it apparently does like? I can avail the public ftp site www.net2ftp.com but have yet to figure out how to get it to upload in text mode.

I need someone to show me where to go to start from a sub-primer level regarding python cgi (or any python work I can do without ssh access and only my cpanel access); one that does not assume I know where to put file foo.py or file bar.html -- yes I cange the permissions to 755.

I need to learn python and am willing to put in the RTFM hours. But before I do that -- I just want a few simple simple multiple file configured easy programs to work (from within my BH cpanel access only temporary constrictions). When I can get command line again with ssh -- I'll be that much farther ahead.

I don't want you, necessarily, to give the answers -- I need, however, to find out where/how [where and how] !where how! to find or discover the answers.

Re: More OOP in Python

I'm not sure how to answer your question, so I'll direct you to the books that have helped me the most. Python How to Program by Deitel and Programming Python from O'Reilly.

The Deitel book is actually a text book that walks through nearly every aspect of Python in a nice, easy-to-follow manner; it actually has a chapter dedicated to Python CGI. The O'Reilly book is more like specific task tutorials rather than a broad overview of the language. Together these books should give you a reasonably complete Python education. You can also look at the other O'Reilly Python books, like the Python Cookbook, which gives specific programs for common tasks.

Here's some of the Python sites I've found useful:
http://aspn.activestate.com/ASPN/Python/Cookbook/
http://groups.google.com/group/comp.lang.python?lnk=li&
http://www.python.org/pypi
http://python-forum.org/py/login.php
