Harddisk problem

ya, i got this harddisk which i couldnt read from my "my computer", and it doesnt show up too under "disk management", however, i'm able to detect it under device manager...

a background on how i got this harddisk...

i got this harddisk out from a sony vaio laptop, i went to re-install the recovery disk on my laptop, but halfway through the process of the recovery disk, the whole laptop suddenly hang and spoilt in the end... so i took out the harddisk and bought an external casing for it..

try plugging into my desktop, thats why i couldnt read anything from "my computer" or "disk management"...

can anyone help me to salvage my harddisk back ?

thanks...

Re: Harddisk problem

It most likely has a corrupted FS on it. If you can't see it through Windows, try a DOS prompt (though that probably won't work since it can't assign a drive letter). Your other option is to try mounting it under Linux then formatting the drive. Beyond that I don't know what else to do unless you want to spend money on diagnostic software/services.

Re: Harddisk problem

Find a free version of fdisk and repartition the drive. The partition table is probably screwed up.

Re: Harddisk problem

FS = file system (such as NTFS, FAT32, etc).

If the drive is connected and working, partition magic should recognize it. If you have it in an external encosure, make sure the drivers are installed properly.

Re: Harddisk problem

I've never used partition table doctor, so I can't be 100% sure, but it seems that there are 2 likely possibilites:
1. The hard disk is bad.
2. The drivers are not installed properly.
How do you know that the drivers are installed properly? You can never be sure until you get your computer to read a hard disk in the enclosure. Do you have another hard disk you could put in the enclosure to test it? Or another laptop you could put the hard disk in to see if it works?
