can anyone one tell me the difference between a switch and a router and can your explain how a switch works

when burning a cd it will have some skips on some of the tracks on the cd when i play it in a cd player. the same thing is going on when i play it on my comp/cd drive it will have skips on some of the tracks. what can i do to stop this? the tracks are good. i can play them from my comp in w.m.p....
